Mental Health: One Family’s Story | You Are Not Alone

6th Grade – 8th Grade

9th Grade – 12th Grade

English

A mother and son talk about his behavioral health struggles and the help they got through a family advocacy organization. In second grade, Shawn Gonzales, a gifted student, began to act out in high-intensity tantrums. He was soon diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. His mother, Resa, was by Shawn’s side all of the way and, through strong parenting and finding the right combination of medications, he has made great strides. They got help from the Kentucky Partnership for Families and Children, a statewide support, training, and advocacy organization dedicated to families with behavioral health challenges, where Resa now works. This segment is part of You Are Not Alone, a youth mental health series produced by KET.
