English

There are two names used to refer to many Native Americans from Upstate New York. One is the traditional name in their Native language. The other is a term coined by the French in the 1600s, as they interacted with Native Americans in the Northeast. Onondaga storyteller Perry Ground explains the difference, and why the distinction is important.
